New Year’s Resolutions

January 22, 2015

New Year's resolutions listThe New Year has come and passed.

Like every new year, I make New Year’s resolutions. I know that there are people out there who don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions because it has never really worked for them. For some reason, that annoys me a little because I feel like they give up too easily.

For me, I find that having New Year’s resolutions is useful. It helps me shape my year and gives me a direction of how my year will be. A New Year’s resolution doesn’t have to be something different or something weird every year. Sometimes, my New Year’s resolutions are the ones from the previous year because I haven’t quite achieved them.

A busy but fun November

November has been a very busy month for me. My studies are in full swing and I took part in a writing event in November called NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo is a time where writers do their best to write a novel. You have to write every day for a month so that you can reach your word count goal or, better still, you have a novel by the end of the month.

With university in full swing, it was definitely not easy to try and juggle NaNoWriMo and studies at the same time. Of course, my studies were my priority. I could only write once I completed homework and the revision that I wanted to complete for the day.

Assumptions of people

November 3, 2014

Free time? What is that? Most other university courses held in my country have assignments and examinations. However, they do not have a final examination that completely decides the grades for that year. Instead, they have many tiny exams that add up to make the final grades.

Since my course does not have assignments and other tiny examinations, people assume that I have a lot of free time or that my course is easier in that sense. To some people, this means that I don’t have to study until the examinations are nearby and thus, I have loads of free time.

So it begins…

October 1, 2014

EMFSS study guidesWell, year 2 has begun. Actually, classes have already started for the past three weeks. However, it is only now that I really feel that my year 2 has really started.

The reason for that is that I am beginning to realise how interesting and challenging year 2 is. It makes me wonder if year 3 would be much harder. Anyhow, that’s for me to worry about in year 3. Since I am in year 2, I should be worrying about year 2.

This week, I received my subject guides and it makes me very happy.

I suppose I really like receiving parcels. It feels some sort like Christmas.

The parcel feels like a present and unwrapping makes me really excited. Even though I know what is in it, it still makes me very happy.

To be or not to be

September 25, 2014

In the throes of writer's block in the middle of the sea.

In the throes of writer’s block in the middle of the sea.

They say that life is full of journeys, with their starts and ends. Before I tell you about my new journey, let me first introduce myself. My name is Michelle Chang Jade Yin and yes, I know its a mouthful. My close friends mostly call me Mick or Mickey and occasionally Michael, which compliments the tomboy in me.

I am the oldest of three children and an avid, nay, obsessive book reader (I once read the whole Harry Potter series without even stopping). I was in an all-girls school throughout my primary and secondary school life. Hence, lifting heavy stuff and talking sass is never a problem (I’m a veteran in both those things). I might look tough on the outside, but turn on Tuesdays With Morrie and I would cry you a river. I like to think I’m a calm person but my friends say that I turn into a Purple Minion (from Despicable Me 2) when I’m stressed. Turning 19 this year, life has definitely been full with ups and down, but I have never regretted the journeys I have been through. So here I am now, in front of my laptop, typing away about the next great journey in my life. I hope you enjoy.

First year exam results

August 18, 2014

Fortunately for me, I managed to pass all my year 1 subjects for the BSc Economics and Management. Honestly, I am just relieved that I don’t have to repeat year 1.

I was very worried that I had to repeat year 1 because I knew I made some severe mistakes in my exams. The thought of repeating year 1 really wrecked me. Thus, when I found out that I passed, I was definitely very happy.

Some of my university mates are unhappy with their average results. However, even though my results were very average, I am not unhappy or discouraged.

If anything, I feel motivated and pumped up for year 2.

My Exam Experience

May 28, 2014

Socrates quote: Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.

The more I studied, the more I realised I loved learning.

To be honest, before the exams, I was very worried. I felt unprepared but at the same time, I knew that if I was given as much time as I needed, I probably still feel unprepared.

This was as prepared as I can get.

I was scared because I was afraid that I would fail and failing means that I would have to repeat the year. The thought of repeating the year frustrated me. Doing this all over again felt overwhelming and because of that, I nearly had a meltdown.

However, as the exams came closer, the more I revised, the more I felt like the subject and I clicked.

It’s like a sudden clarity.
Suddenly, I can see it in a new light.
Suddenly, it all makes sense now.
I wouldn’t say that I completely understood it but I could see what it was trying to say now.

It’s odd. I spent my entire year learning and constantly revising, only managing to understand parts of this knowledge. But as the exams came closer, all these parts suddenly merged and now, I understood better.
