Today seems like a good day for me to write my first University of London blog post. There’s a blizzard raging outside my flat in Greenwich, I’m not going anywhere and there’s no excuse for not doing a bit of writing.
Let me introduce myself. I’ve been studying for the MBA through the University of London now for 2 years and I’m about halfway through the course. By day I also work at the University of London in their marketing department.
I wouldn’t describe myself as the ‘perfect student’. I’m prone to procrastination and often it doesn’t take much to distract me from my studies. However, somehow I’ve made it this far in the degree and now I’m halfway through, I’m determined to finish my MBA!
I would say this term I’ve been slightly more organised than in previous years. I’ve figured out, studying hard isn’t really the secret to success on a University of London course. It’s all about studying smarter. I’ve gone through past exam papers to see what typically comes up and what hardly ever gets tested and started to create a rough study plan based on this. This helps me manage what limited time I have more effectively.
Also technology has also assisted in getting me more organised. In particular, mobile apps really make a difference in helping me prioritise my time. A free app for iPhone that I’m really fond of at the moment is MYSQA.
This great little tool helps you import your exam schedule into it and based on this, it generate a study plan. You can also add in extra information about subjects to prioritise and the amount of time by day you have to study. Also once you start using your plan, MYSQA makes it quite easy to amend it, if you feel you don’t have as much time as you expected.
I’m sure we all have subjects that are just a little bit more challenging than others and this little app on your phone encourages you to do that one hour of Accounting and Finance that you have been avoiding and helps you keep on track.
Anyway, now it’s time for me to stop writing and actually open my financial accounting textbook. Oh well, it’s snowing, there’s really not much else I could be doing…
